Best Value Tires

The cheapest tire isn't always the best value, and the most expensive isn't always necessary. Value means the right balance of price, safety and how long the tire lasts for the way you drive. Here is how to compare.
Think cost per kilometre, not price per tire
A tire that costs 20% more but lasts 40% longer is the better deal. Check the treadwear rating and any mileage warranty. A 100,000 km warranty on a mid-priced tire often works out cheaper per kilometre than a budget tire replaced twice as often.
The three tiers
- Premium brands (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli, Goodyear): the best wet braking, the longest life and the most refinement. Worth it for high-mileage drivers, heavier SUVs and anyone who drives in tough conditions.
- Mid-range brands (Yokohama, Toyo, Firestone, General, Hankook, Cooper, Falken): often 80-90% of premium performance at a noticeably lower price. The sweet spot for many drivers.
- Value brands: a sensible choice for low-mileage drivers, older vehicles or a second car. Check the traction grade (aim for A or better) and read the treadwear rating.
Don't compromise on these
- The right type for the season. A budget winter tire will still out-grip a premium all-season on snow. See the winter guide.
- Load index and speed rating. Match or exceed your vehicle's original tires. It is on your door placard.
- Wet grip. BC is wet. A traction grade of A or AA matters more here than in drier provinces.
Other ways to save
- Look at the set-of-4 price and the out-the-door estimate on each tire, which include installation, the environmental levy and tax, so you can compare real totals.
- Keep tires at the right pressure and rotate them every 8,000-10,000 km to get every kilometre you paid for.
- Get an alignment when you fit new tires. Misalignment can wear out a new set in months.
